Explanation of Military Service:
July 2005-Oct 2005- Marine Corps Boot Camp, MCRD San Diego, California. Endured many rigorous training exercises and developed many excellent leadership qualities. Promoted to senior leadership billet as a squad leader for my platoon before graduation.
Oct 2005-Jan 2006- School of Infantry, Camp Pendleton California. There I developed many advanced infantry skills and training. I pursued training as an Assault Man, MOS 0351, specialized skills included anti-armor roles and tactics utilizing tools such as the SMAW rocket launcher and Javelin missile system. Trained in urban warfare breaches tactics specializing in demolitions and explosives skill sets and knowledge.
Jan 2006-Aug 2007- 2nd Battalion 7th Marine Regiment, Echo Company, Weapons Platoon, Assault Section, Twentynine Palms California. While serving with this unit I had a variety of roles and responsibilities. I served as a SMAW gunner, Combat Demolitions Expert, Assault Man Team Leader and Squad Automatic Rifleman at various times during my assignment to the unit. I also trained other infantry men in anti-armor tactics and in basic demolition procedures. I have extensive combat medical training, attended combat lifesaver course multiple times, a live tissue life saver course using live animals, and I am trained to control traumatic injury in a variety of situations. I served as squad combat life saver during a combat tour to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom (see deployments).
Aug 2007-Feb 2008- 2nd Btln. 7th Marine Regiment, H&S Co., Scout/Sniper Platoon . During the final days of my combat deployment to Iraq I volunteered to take our battalion Scout/Sniper Indoc. At the end of the screening I was one of a few selected to become part of our battalion Scout/Sniper Platoon. Immediately after return to the United States and a brief leave period I was sent to one of the Marine Corps’ toughest schools, the Marine Corps Scout/Sniper basic course. This course is one of the most mentally and physical challenging schools in the Marine Corps with a very high attrition rate. I successfully passed the grueling 10 week training and gained skills in advanced shooting techniques, stalking methods/application, concealment training, mission planning, and other vital skills of the trade. I was then sent back to 2/7 Scout/Sniper Plt. I served as Assistant Team Leader for Sierra 1 (Team 1 Scout/Sniper Plt. 2/7).
During our training work up state side to prepare for our battalion’s upcoming combat deployment to Afghanistan I participated in a variety of training exercises including advance shooting skills with the M-40 sniper rifle, Barrett M-107 (special application scoped rifle), simulated sniper missions (including mission planning), observation techniques, optics training (including advanced thermal and night vision devices), and other sniper team related skill sets. During our final work up/exercise, the Mojave Viper, my Team Leader was injured. I ran our team in his place as Acting Team Leader for the final training evolution (Mojave Viper is a month long training event to simulate a deployment).
During this period I assumed advanced leadership responsibilities, coordinating with senior officers in the battalion’s line companies to run complex simulated combat operations and maneuvers. Nearing the end of this training my leader recovered. Weeks later I began my second combat deployment to Afghanistan Operation Enduring Freedom when I was sent with the advance party in place of the Team Leader (see deployments).
Feb 2008-May 2009- 2/7 Echo Co., Company Trainer/Subject Matter Expert. I served as a Company Trainer/Subject Matter Expert in a variety of skill/sets (optics, infantry skills, observation techniques, etc.). I train new marines arriving to the unit to help them on their next deployment and did so until my EAS (end of active service).
Deployments:
Iraq, Jan 2007-Aug 2007 – During my combat deployment to Iraq I served in various challenging roles such as squad designated marksman, combat life saver in our squad medic team, squad automatic rifleman, and team leader for our platoon’s Mark 19 automatic grenade launcher/heavy machine gun two man team. I was attached to 2nd Rifle Platoon, Echo Co., 2/7 for 3 months. I then served in Wpns. Plt. Echo Co. for the duration of the deployment. I participated in routine combat patrols and direct engagements with Al Qaeda forces. I also provided physical security for several FOBs (forward operating base) and Pbs (patrol bases). During this deployment I gained the ability to operate and work in extreme conditions (weather, stress, etc). I also gained confidence and the ability to maintain composure even under stressful and life threatening circumstances. During the course of this deployment I participated in the routing of hostile insurgents, locating/securing/destroying dangerous ordinance such as IEDs, and assisting the local populace with medical care to encourage friendly relations.
Afghanistan, Mar 2008-Oct 2008 - During my second combat deployment to Afghanistan I assumed greater responsibility and leadership roles. I served as Assistant Team Leader, Scout/Sniper Team One, Scout/Sniper Plt., in support of Company E, 2nd Btln., 7th Marines. I conducted more than 60 combat patrols as Assistant Team Leader of a six man team, often operating separately from friendly forces in Taliban occupied areas. Our team also supported over 16 major combined combat operations, during which I often worked alongside Afghan National Police, Afghan National Army, and the Royal Irish Regiment. This experience gave me the ability to work well with people from all cultural backgrounds. I participated in several combat engagements with Taliban forces. During a combined combat clearing operation our team spotted several Taliban forces preparing to coordinate an attack on our friendly coalition forces. My Team leader and myself were able to engage and eliminate several Taliban, disrupting the pending attack on friendly forces. This deployment has given me confidence to assume great responsibility and to have a professional working mindset in even the most stressful situations.

1974-1977 Served in the U.S. Army, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Bks, HI, as a Military Policeman

2008 - Retired from full time law enforcement

I believe:
1. SAFETY is everything. You can be the fastest and most accurate shooter in the world, but if you don’t “live safety”, you’ve got nothing of value in my eyes. Double and triple check everything. Muzzle discipline and trigger finger discipline are crucial.
2. Speed is fine, but accuracy is final. You cannot miss fast enough to win a gunfight.
3. That having been said, speed is life. You must shoot deliberate accurate shots in a hurry.
4. Use cover. But if there is no cover, movement is critical. I will not stand still and slug it out with bullets.
5. Practice, Practice, Practice. If everything else were equal, the better-trained fighter wins. Rehearse success.
6. Don’t get shot. But if you do get shot, never give up! Just because you’ve been shot, it doesn’t mean you’re going to die. Just because you’ve been stabbed, it doesn’t mean you’re going to die. But if you give up, you die for sure.
7. Baaaa! If you are entitled to carry a concealed weapon when you leave your home, and you don’t do it, that’s what you should say as you walk out the door.
8. Attitude, Knowledge, and Lifestyle - An armed citizen must not be a big-mouth, braggart, or bully. An armed citizen must know the laws pertaining to self-defense, as ignorance of the law is no defense in court. And, an armed citizen should live a safe and law-abiding lifestyle. That lifestyle choice is the single best thing a person can do to avoid ever needing to use the weapon they’re carrying.
9. Quality matters. Don’t buy crappy guns because they’re cheaper. Your life is worth more than that. By the same token, don’t buy expensive “whiz bang” flashy guns because they’re “cool lookin”. They may look cool, but they are not always as practical or reliable.
10. The 2nd Amendment means what it says. But it must be defended. If you value your 2nd Amendment rights, and you don’t vote, or you aren’t registered to vote, shame on you.
